The Inca Calendar

The Inca civilisation, the largest empire in South America, was one of the ancient Peruvian civilisations most deeply involved in astronomy.

The Incas identified the stars, the constellations and the different seasons, and on this basis they devised an Inca agricultural calendar.

An interesting fact is that the sacred Inca cities of Machu Picchu, Pisac and Ollantaytambo are geodetically aligned.

Some of its most important structures, such as the Intihuatana sundial, served as astronomical calendars; these temples made it possible to determine the exact dates of the solstices and equinoxes.

To this day, it is possible to explore these buildings whilst visiting the Cusco region and Machu Picchu.

In summary, astronomy was of great importance to the Inca civilisation due to its use in religious and agricultural contexts. In this way, the Incas were able to recognise the solstices, equinoxes and changes of season in order to better determine the optimal times for planting and harvesting.
