Peruvian alpaca:
Peru is the home of the alpaca. This is beyond doubt, as 80 per cent of the world’s alpaca fibre production comes from the land of the Incas. And the region of Peru that contributes most to this output is the Puno region (39.6 per cent of production), followed by the regions of Cusco, Arequipa and Huancavelica, amongst others.
It is there, in the Peruvian Andes, at an altitude of over 4,000 metres, where temperatures drop to ten degrees below zero, that this noble camelid with its fluffy coat is born and raised.
In Peru, there are two species of alpaca in total
: - The Huacaya alpaca, known for its voluminous fleece with curly tufts. This species of alpaca comes in a wide range of natural colours and shades.
- The Suri alpaca, renowned for its long fibre, has hanging, stiff, silky and more elastic tufts.
Natural alpaca fibre is three times stronger than other fibres and seven times warmer. It is also the only fibre that adapts to your body temperature. Indeed, this remarkable animal experiences extreme temperature fluctuations within a single day (from -20 to 25 degrees), which explains the development of a fleece composed of fibres that are particularly effective at regulating temperature.
Alpaca garments are fine and lightweight. They have a natural, silky sheen that lasts even after washing. Alpaca fibres do not retain water, and the natural colours are resistant to sunlight.
Another interesting quality of this fibre is that it is hypoallergenic, making it ideal for young children, the elderly and those with sensitive skin.
This fibre comes in over 22 natural colours. It can also be dyed before weaving. In all our Inka Products, we use only natural dyes.
Unlike cashmere, alpaca is an eco-friendly natural fibre as it requires no chemical treatment, bleaching or chemical dyeing.
Treat yourself to an original, durable, high-quality and 100% warm alpaca accessory that you can use all year round.
